Last summer, three alumnae returned to YCIS, swapping student life for internships. They brought back memories and skills, along with the heartfelt perspective of a YCIS family member. Here’s how they made an impact.

Joyce Wang: Reigniting a Passion for Stories

Class of 2023 alumna Joyce Wang (double major in History and English, The University of Hong Kong) traded university lectures for high school classrooms at YCIS Shanghai Pudong. As a History and English intern, she guided students through persuasive writing and text analysis—and rediscovered her passion. “YCIS was the place where my passion for stories—both written and lived—was kindled,” she said. “Stepping back, not as a student but as an intern and alumna, was incredible. I learned that the best lessons are taught with support and heart.” For Joyce, it was a full-circle moment, helping the next generation find their voice.

    Kiki Lin: Counselling with Purpose

Kiki Lin (Class of 2016) brought her psychology background and a drive to support students. Holding a Master of Applied Behaviour Analysis from Monash University, she worked with the YCIS’s counselling team, shadowing sessions and joining the Learning Support Team. Working with YCIS’s counselling team, Kiki shadowed sessions, joined the Learning Support Team, and absorbed wisdom from mentor Ms Jamie Hoel. “Every kid deserves to feel understood,” Kiki shared, “By shadowing Ms Hoel’s counselling sessions, I was able to gain valuable insights about counselling practices within a school environment.” The internship sharpened her skills and reignited her belief in the power of care.

Gigi Deng: Bridging Alumni & Community

Gigi Deng (Class of 2025, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) joined the Institutional Advancement Office, focusing on alumni relations. She wanted real-world experience—and got way more. Interviewing alumni was her favourite part. “Hearing about their journeys and how YCIS shaped them was inspiring.” Having studied at YCIS Shanghai Puxi for over a decade, Gigi leveraged her deep community understanding to propose innovative ideas. “I would encourage younger alumni to take this opportunity. You meet people from the YCYW Education Network, connect with experienced alumni, and receive professional training. It’s an invaluable transition from school to the workplace,” Gigi concluded.

More Than an Internship—A Circle of Giving Back

For YCIS, this programme is about more than filling roles. “Alumni don’t just ‘intern’—they bring their love for YCIS and make an impact,” said Ms Rachel Zhao, Director of Institutional Advancement, China. “We want educators, counsellors, and anyone passionate about shaping future YCYW stories.” As Joyce, Kiki, and Gigi depart with enriched resumes and hearts full of emotion, their journey reminds us: YCIS is more than just a school—it’s a community that keeps giving, growing, and passing the torch.
