During 2-15 August 2026, students in Years 10-12 / Grades 9-11 from YWIES Yantai, YWIES Shanghai Lingang, YCIS Qingdao, and YCIS Hong Kong, took to the skies as part of the YCYW Somerset Cultural Centre’s exciting two-week Summer Aviation Programme.

    • Real-World Flying Experience

The students completed three days of formal flight training at a licensed flight school, helping to fly the aircraft under the guidance of experienced instructors. They also began logging their flight hours in official logbooks – an important first step towards meeting the training requirements for a pilot’s licence.

    • Flight Simulator Training

In a realistic Boeing 737 cockpit simulator, students learned about the fundamentals of aircraft control, from take-off through to landing. This immersive experience helped them develop a basic understanding of aviation and prepared them for their practical flying lessons.

    • Experiencing the Science of Flight Through Gliding

During their gliding experiences, the students explored the principles of aerodynamics from the cockpit of an engine-free glider. Accompanied by an experienced pilot, they felt first-hand how changes in airflow and thermal currents influence the aircraft’s movements.

    • Indoor Skydiving

During their gliding experiences, the students explored the principles of aerodynamics from the cockpit of an engine-free glider. Accompanied by an experienced pilot, they felt first-hand how changes in airflow and thermal currents influence the aircraft’s movements.

    • A Celebration in the Skies

Beyond their classroom lessons and flight training, the students attended the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, where they watched the spectacular mass ascent of hot-air balloons and enjoyed the spectacular night-time hot-air ballon light show. This added even more excitement to their memorable experiences.

    • Learning Beyond the Airfield

The YCYW Summer Aviation Programme provided students with a comprehensive introduction to aviation, engineering and aerodynamics, combining academic learning, practical training and adventure during an inspiring two-week journey.

By travelling to the United Kingdom, the students gained far more than valuable hands-on flying experience. Living and learning in the United Kingdom provided opportunities for cultural and language immersion. Through visits to stately historic homes and learning about British heritage and everyday life, the students broadened their cultural understanding while also developing greater confidence in communicating in English. These experiences helped them consolidate their spoken English skills in authentic, real-world settings.
