Have you ever wondered what real scientific research is like?
It’s not about formulas in textbooks or questions on exams. It’s about standing at the forefront of global discoveries, using experiments and data to explore the unknown and tackle humanity’s greatest challenges.
Building on its success during the past two years, the YCYW Advanced Research Programme, in partnership with OSCAR (Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research), will run again in April 2026. Students will be immersed in high-level research experiences and a world-class environment, supported by university scholars, leading experts, and the dedicated YCYW Educational Futures (EdFutures) team.
OSCAR is located in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Fully owned by the University of Oxford, OSCAR was established to expand the research activities of its Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division. OSCAR leverages Oxford’s strengths in biotechnology, advanced materials, computational methods, and manufacturing technologies to provide innovative solutions to global challenges in healthcare, energy, the environment, and finance.
At OSCAR's world-class facilities, the students experienced the exhilarating challenges of real scientific research, and encountered disruptive technologies and the frontiers of scientific inquiry. They attended a series of lectures and seminars in various scientific fields, and participated in hands-on laboratory work and experiments.
“This experience has been a cornerstone of our education, thanks to the unwavering support we received. From day one, I was exposed to various research methods and gained lab skills and insights about the research conducted at OSCAR.”
An-An, student from YCIS Beijing
“Observing the Optoelectronics Group, I learned about the complexities of solar cells and perovskite materials. It was an incredible chance to witness OSCAR's cutting-edge experiments first-hand.”
Sonic, student from YCIS Hong Kong
“The essence of this programme is to discover your passions. Remember: there are no failures in research—only success and learning.”
Dr Petr Jurcicek,
Senior Research Scientist at OSCAR
“We aim to equip our students with skills like networking with experts, advanced questioning techniques, and the capacity to comprehend and author research papers. We want them to be at the forefront of technology and research, an experience far beyond their years.”
Dr Christopher Hurley,
Head of EdFutures at YCYW]
These reflections show how the OSCAR programme not only helps students to improve their academic abilities and deepen their understanding of cutting-edge science, but also helps them to discover their passion for research, cultivate inquiry skills with a global perspective, and build the confidence to engage in dialogue with leading scholars.
In 2026, we will offer four cutting-edge research areas for you to choose from:
Regenerative Medicine / Biomedical Engineering
Future Frontiers in Regenerative Medical Technology and Tissue Engineering
Biotechnology / Biology
Cutting-edge Biotechnology for Addressing Health and Environmental Challenges: From Artificial Intelligence Design to Biological Verification
Chemistry / Materials Science / Chemical Engineering
Ultimate Clean Energy: Process Development of Membrane Electrode Assemblies for Green Hydrogen Production
Semiconductor Physics
Nobel Prize-Inspired Advancements: Quantum Dot-Based Light Sources

During the programme, students will
➨ Analyse academic papers, undertake laboratory work, design individual research topics, and attend academic workshops.
➨ Work with OSCAR researchers in their respective fields.
➨ Shadow research professors and their teams as they complete a research project.
➨ Spend evenings doing sports, reading and relaxing, followed by mentoring sessions with the YCYW EdFutures team to support student projects.
