Choosing between schools in Hong Kong and Guangzhou means considering curriculum transitions, the timing of enrolment and how family life will work. Yew Chung International School of Hong Kong (YCIS Hong Kong), Yew Wah International Education School of Guangzhou (YWIES Guangzhou) and the planned Yew Wah School of Hong Kong have similar names, but their educational pathways and current stages of development differ.
Yew Wah School of Hong Kong is still in development and is expected to open in the 2028–2029 academic year. If your child needs to transfer soon, start by checking current admissions arrangements at YCIS Hong Kong and YWIES Guangzhou. The planned Hong Kong school can form part of a longer-term plan. Its actual opening date and admissions arrangements remain subject to the school's formal announcements. Official introduction to Yew Wah School of Hong Kong
When contacting a school, provide your child's date of birth, current year or grade, curriculum, identity documents and intended enrolment date.
YCIS Hong Kong's admissions guidance explains that placement considers age, previous schooling, academic performance, English proficiency and learning needs. Assessment helps determine the appropriate year level and programme. Your child's current year or grade name therefore does not automatically determine their placement after transfer. A successful assessment also remains subject to the availability of a suitable place. YCIS Hong Kong admissions guidance
YWIES Guangzhou accepts mid-year transfers into Grades 1–12 in its own grade system. The appropriate entry grade, programme entry point and availability need to be checked against your child's circumstances. The grades that Yew Wah School of Hong Kong will open in its first year have not yet been confirmed; families should await the school's formal announcement.
YCIS Hong Kong's secondary pathway leads to the IB Diploma Programme. YWIES Guangzhou offers an IGCSE-to-A Level pathway and a separate HKDSE programme. The curriculum at Yew Wah School of Hong Kong remains a development plan.
| School | Secondary and upper secondary pathways | Transition questions for parents |
| YCIS Hong Kong | Years 7–9 follow the Yew Chung Curriculum; Years 10–11 follow IGCSE; Years 12–13 follow the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) | Which year is the right entry point, and what learning skills need strengthening before IGCSE or IBDP? |
| YWIES Guangzhou | Primary and lower secondary education is based on China's national nine-year compulsory education curriculum. The four-year UPP comprises two years of IGCSE and two years of A Level. A separate three-year HKDSE programme is also available | How does the child's previous schooling connect with the intended programme, and how are the entry point, duration and subject choices determined? |
| Yew Wah School of Hong Kong (planned) | Plans combine the Chinese National Curriculum with YCYW teaching approaches; the upper secondary plans include IGCSE and A Level | Which grades will open in the first year, and how will later programmes be introduced in phases? |
Curriculum information comes from the YCIS Hong Kong secondary website, the YWIES Guangzhou 2026–2027 admissions prospectus and the official Yew Wah School of Hong Kong page.
Ask each school to map a pathway from your child's current stage: where they would enter, how long they would study, which subjects they could choose and how the programme connects with university applications. The labels “four-year UPP” and “three-year HKDSE” alone do not establish whether your child is ready to enter those programmes directly.
If you are considering HKDSE at YWIES Guangzhou, also confirm the examination candidate category under which your child would register.
Break the question down: can your child join classroom discussions, read subject materials and complete written assignments? What support can the school provide?
YCIS Hong Kong lists English as an Additional Language (EAL) and English Intensive Programmes (EIP) for students who are not native English speakers. It also stresses that IGCSE and IBDP require a particularly high level of English. Families should check the admissions requirements with the admissions team. YCIS Hong Kong admissions FAQ
For students preparing for IBDP who need a transition year, YCIS Hong Kong offers a one-year IB Pathway in Year 11, preparing them for the subsequent two-year IBDP. Ask whether this entry point is suitable for your child and which skills the assessment will consider. YCIS Hong Kong IB Pathway
At YWIES Guangzhou, applicants to Grades 1–3 in the school's grade system take an English interview. Applicants to Grades 4–12 take an English interview and CEM tests in English and mathematics.
During a school visit, go beyond asking whether English support exists. Ask the school to explain, based on your child's assessment, what needs strengthening, how support is organised, how progress is measured and whether additional charges apply.
The figures below are annual basic tuition fees, rather than a family's total annual education spending. Year and grade labels refer to each school's own system; YCIS Hong Kong and YWIES Guangzhou levels cannot be matched by number alone.
| School and stage | Currency | 2026–2027 annual basic tuition |
| YCIS Hong Kong: Years 1–6 | HKD | 273,380 |
| YCIS Hong Kong: Years 7–11 and IB Pathway | HKD | 266,150 |
| YCIS Hong Kong: Years 12–13 | HKD | 272,250 |
| YWIES Guangzhou: Grades 1–6 | RMB | 185,000 |
| YWIES Guangzhou: Grades 7–9 | RMB | 189,600 |
| YWIES Guangzhou: UPP (IGCSE and A Level stages) | RMB | 276,700 |
Families entering YCIS Hong Kong also need to budget for a debenture. The website lists the first-child debenture as HKD350,000 for Primary and HKD470,000 for Secondary. It bears no interest and is refunded after the student leaves, subject to its terms. It affects the funds needed at entry and should be considered separately from annual tuition. YCIS Hong Kong debenture guidance
YWIES Guangzhou's primary and lower secondary fees cannot be applied to upper secondary education. The UPP annual basic tuition is listed above. Boarding, meals, school buses and other services also need to be checked individually, particularly whether a boarding quotation covers five-day or seven-day arrangements.
Formal fees for Yew Wah School of Hong Kong have not yet been confirmed.
Ask for two lists when budgeting: the payments required at entry and the costs expected each year. For a cross-city school choice, include housing, transport and parental care arrangements in the family budget.
YCIS Hong Kong does not offer boarding and requires at least one parent or legal guardian to live with the student in Hong Kong. Parents who mainly work in Mainland China therefore need to arrange local accommodation and care first.
YWIES Guangzhou can provide seven-day boarding for Grades 1–12 in its own grade system. Boarders must return home during statutory holidays, Christmas holidays, Chinese New Year holidays and the summer break. Seven-day boarding still requires a family plan for holiday care.
Families considering boarding in Guangzhou can ask about weekend activities, overnight care, school–family communication and procedures when a child is unwell. Families considering Hong Kong should assess the relevant campus, home address and school travel arrangements together.
Use your family's needs to narrow the options:
These suggestions are based on the information obtained. For the final comparison, ask each school to answer the same questions about the same child: which year or grade they can apply for, how the curriculum connects with their previous schooling, what learning support they need and what the family must provide in costs and care time.
