In September 2024, YCIS Chongqing's Year 12 and 13 IBDP Physics students delved into particle physics through the YCYW Particle Physics Masterclass.
This programme allowed them to explore fundamental universe inquiries, engage with physicists from Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire(CERN)and Fermilab, and grasp the complexities of the Standard Model. Guided by their IBDP Physics teacher Ms. Lamayo, the students began with an introductory session on particle physics basics, including quarks, leptons, and their interactions.
A highlight was hands-on activities using tools like the Quark Workbench and software such as iSpy and CIMA. They analyzed real data from CERN, manipulating 3D visuals of particle collisions in their web browsers to understand how physicists make discoveries.
Students also learned about particle physics applications in medical imaging, technology, and energy research, broadening their understanding beyond theory to real-world impact. Aside from expanding knowledge, the masterclass developed critical thinking skills. Completing research tasks earned students certificates, recognizing their efforts and skills.
For our IBDP Physics students, this experience was more than just an academic milestone—it was a chance to step into the shoes of researchers, explore their potential, and consider future careers in science. We are incredibly proud of the passion, dedication, and curiosity they showed throughout the masterclass.
Gratitude was extended to the YCYW Educational Futures Division and the school leadership team for their pivotal roles in organizing this successful masterclass. Their support and vision have been key to making the YCYW Particle Physics Masterclass a success.
