On 13 October, “The Way We Talk” film screening and post-screening discussion was held at the Auditorium of YCIS Hong Kong. Around 150 students, parents, and teachers joined this inspiring event.
As the lights dimmed and the screen lit up, “The Way We Talk” brought the audience into a story about the deaf community, their struggles and inner strength to speak up.
After the screening, the much-anticipated post-screening session began. We were honoured to welcome Ms Yang Luye, YCIS Class of 2010, 2026 Alumni Hall of Fame Awardee, and Mr Adam Wong, the film’s director, as our guest speakers for the post-film dialogue.
Ms Luye Yang, YCIS Hong Kong Class of 2010 and 2026 Alumni Hall of Fame inductee, shared her personal growth journey as an alumna. Speaking from first-hand experience, she reflected on difference and purpose:
“Hearing impairment sets me apart from others, yet it is precisely these differences that have helped me discover another meaning to move forward in life.”
She talked about the fears deaf people often face — fear of judgement and being misunderstood — and encouraged the deaf community to find their own authentic voice. She also exchanged ideas with parents and teachers on how families and schools can nurture safe, inclusive environment for honest communications.
Director Mr Adam Wong shared the inspiration behind producing “The Way We Talk”. He walked the audience through his creative process of capturing the raw, real emotions of deaf and challenged common labelling:
“I’m hesitant to use the term ‘hearing loss’. It describes a loss of hearing, but I don’t see it as a loss, nor should it be treated as a barrier.”
He offered a vivid metaphor to reimagine communication:
“In an underwater world, if you know sign language, you are among the best communicators.”
During the Q&A, he responded to audience questions about courage and authenticity, reminding everyone that meaningful expression does not always require being loud; sincerity carries power.
The audience of roughly 150 YCIS Hong Kong students, parents and teachers took an active part in the Q&A. One attending parent shared: “As a parent, my biggest takeaway is this: Don't rush to choose the 'right path' for your child — first, listen to which path they want to take.”
Valentina, a Year 7 student, offered her reflection: “Having a cochlear implant does not restore full hearing. It is far more tiring for them to listen in noisy environments.”
There were no standard answers, yet genuine connections filled the room.
More than a film screening, this event was an intergenerational conversation. Ms Yang Luye, as a YCIS Hong Kong alumna, built a bridge connecting the school’s past and present. Director Mr Adam Wong opened a window to the deaf community’s inner world through film. We gained new perspectives on deaf struggles, while the audience discovered new possibilities of self-expression.
We would like to thank all 150 students, parents and teachers who attended. Special thanks to Ms Yang Luye and Director Mr Adam Wong for this heartfelt dialogue.
May we all keep the patience to listen, and the courage to speak, to recognise differences and understand one another.
